Treasury Committee to quiz financial services chiefs about Sexism in the City

Treasury-Committee-Sexism-in-the-City-inquiry

In the second session of the ‘Sexism in the City’ inquiry, MPs will question representatives from UK Finance, the Association of British Insurers, the Investment Association and the Alternative Investment Management Association.

This will give the Committee an opportunity to gain insight on how the banking, insurance, investment management and hedge fund sectors are trying to tackle the issue of sexism in their sectors.

MPs are expected to probe on whether firms have effective diversity and inclusion strategies, and the extent to which they are genuinely seeking to address an entrenched culture which disadvantages women.

The Committee is likely to examine why progress on improving female representation and reducing the gender pay gap is so slow, and what more needs to be done to drive real change. The impact of gender pay gap reporting may be examined, with particular focus on whether it has led to fairer pay packages for women across the sector.

In the inquiry’s first session, MPs heard from women’s advocacy groups who shared their view on the experience of women in the financial services sector. Witnesses described “culture” as remaining a big problem and spoke of an “old boys’ network” still prevalent in the industry.

Evidence at the meeting will be provided by:

  • Sarah Boon - Managing Director at UK Finance
  • Yvonne Braun - Director at Association of British Insurers (ABI)
  • Adam Jacobs-Dean- Managing Director at The Alternative Investment Management Association (AIMA)
  • Karen Northey - Director at The Investment Association
