Raft of insurance leaders 'Step Up for Dementia'

Insurance-United-against-Dementia

This autumn, the insurance industry is coming together again to help fight dementia with the ‘Step Up for Dementia’ Challenge.

Insurance United Against Dementia (IUAD) has launched the new fundraising initiative to unite the industry in the build up to this year’s Insurance Day of Giving.

Senior figures from across the industry have signed up with their colleagues, families and pets to walk at least 10,000 steps a day for the whole of September.

Leading lights of the industry, all the board members of the IUAD campaign have signed up and started fundraising:

  • Chris Wallace (QBE)
  • Richard Dudley (Aon)
  • Barbara Schonhofer (Schonhofer)
  • Simon Beale (Mitsui Sumitomo)
  • Benedict Burke (Crawford & Company)
  • Paul Jack (Lockton)
  • Sian Fisher (CII)
  • Hayley Robinson (Zurich)
  • Jo Coles (Willis Towers Watson)
  • Clare Hatcher (QBE)
  • Hannah Dixon (Chubb)
  • Andy Tedstone (Cobra)
  • Phil Bayles (Aviva)
  • Ross Harrington (Aviva)
  • Vanessa Chance (Newgate Communications)
  • Simon Cooter (Quotall)
  • Julian Taylor (Weatherbys Hamilton)

Everyone can take part in the challenge and every contribution makes a real difference to the lives of people living with dementia. The aim of the challenge is to walk, run, dance to make up 10,000 steps a day for a month and raise £100 per person.  The challenge can start on any date from now until 30th September and an announcement will be made on 5th November, this year’s Insurance Day of Giving, to showcase how many steps the insurance industry has completed and how much has been raised.

Richard Dudley, Chief Executive, AON, said: “I’ve signed up and I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in and getting my colleagues and contacts to join me in uniting against dementia. This is a fantastic challenge to give the insurance industry the chance to come together and make a real difference as we lead up to this year’s Insurance Day of Giving by raising some much-needed funds for those hit the hardest by the pandemic. It’s such a great way to stay active whilst uniting with others to support such an important cause.”

Kate Lee, Chief Executive of Alzheimer’s Society said: “The past few months have been tough for everyone, but coronavirus has hit people affected by dementia the hardest. Over 80 per cent of people have told us that they have seen a deterioration in their condition and the skills they rely on for daily life - such as shopping, taking public transport and even their ability to speak.

“Many carers are now at breaking point too as they try to cope with providing round the clock care for a loved one, without respite or support from their wider family or formal care providers. Now, more than ever, it is vital that people affected by dementia are not left to face their condition alone. It is brilliant to see the insurance industry joining together and taking on this challenge. Every step and every bit of fundraising will ensure that more people living with dementia can access the support they need at the time they need it the most.”

The Insurance United Against Dementia campaign is an Alzheimer’s Society initiative championed by leaders from across the insurance sector who have joined the Society’s movement to raise awareness and change the lives of people with dementia, including helping make businesses dementia friendly.
