AllClear launches Covid-19 travel policy for older travellers

With one in four over 55s planning to book an overseas holiday in the next three-months, AllClear has announced that it has launched a comprehensive Covid-19 travel insurance package to make travel safe again for older travellers.

Back in March many insurers widely pulled the plug on overseas travel, citing small print on pandemics as an exclusion to travel insurance policies.

With outbound travel contributing £11.7 billion to the UK economy and supporting more than 200,000 jobs, AllClear Insurance believes there is an economic case for rebuilding confidence in travel. Furthermore, an essential element of helping people to rebuild their lives after lockdown is to define the parameters within which people can once again consider travelling in a responsible and safe manner.

Over the past 20 years AllClear has developed a unique risk rating engine allowing them to cover over 3,000,000 people with medical conditions and which is used by many health charities and general insurance brokers.  Now AllClear announces the launch of the most wide-ranging set of COVID-19 travel insurance measures to date for those planning a trip abroad. The new package relating specifically to COVID-19 includes medical expenses, cancellation cover, repatriation and recuperation costs in one policy.

In more detail:

  • Medical expenses - up to £15 million emergency cover for Covid-19.
  • Cancellation and trip curtailment cover for COVID-19 - if a family member becomes ill with Coronavirus or has to quarantine as a result of medically diagnosed Coronavirus.
  • Full Repatriation - cover on costs to bring you back to the UK.
  • Carer expenses: Up to £2,000 expenses for a friend or relative to travel from your home area to stay with you.
  • Recuperation cover - costs for a continued recuperation stay.
  • Emergency flights - costs for your return flight following an enforced stay due to Coronavirus.
  • Up to 30 days free extended cover - should your policy expire whilst you are ill with, quarantined or recuperating from COVID-19 on holiday.

The older traveller accounts for a significant proportion of the UK travel market. During lockdown there was wide-ranging concern over the ability of young people to visit their parents. Post lockdown it is older people that are now most likely to want to travel. Many want to visit family and loved ones abroad, and many travel with pre-existing medical conditions. This is the reason why AllClear Insurance has responded to the urgency to help make travel safe and viable for this market as the country re-emerges from lockdown.

New research conducted among a representative sample of 2,000 adults during lockdown reveals that the over 55s are the least likely age group to have put off overseas travel plans for 2020 (36% compared to a national average of 48%) and older people were most likely to say that when lockdown ends they want to have an overseas holiday (38% among the over 55s rising to 57% of over 65s).

Chris Rolland CEO of AllClear Insurance commented: “Travel is part of the DNA of modern life and, as we come out of lockdown, it is natural that people will want to go overseas – the vital issue is how this can be done safely and fully following Government advice on COVID-19. At AllClear Insurance we specialise in covering older travellers with pre-existing medical conditions so safety, risk management and trust are at the very heart of our business.

“Now is not a time for anyone to travel without insurance or the false economy of cheap cover that’s full of holes. When it is safe to travel, people want to know they will be in a safe pair of hands when they go abroad. That is why we have put together a comprehensive package. We’re not encouraging people to travel when they shouldn’t, but we want to make it safe for people when they can or when they have to. This is not only about helping our customers, it’s about helping to rebuild the country and people’s confidence in one of their most cherished freedoms – the ability to travel.”
