AXA XL launches vehicle interruption cover for Uber drivers in the UK

Partnership to be powered by the new AXA Affinity Protection Platform

AXA XL today announced that it is to provide an innovative, on-demand insurance solution designed to help Uber drivers across the UK offset loss of earnings if they are unable to work because their vehicle is immobilised following an accident.

The solution, called Vehicle Interruption Cover, works alongside Uber’s newly implemented UK loyalty programme – UberPro.

Vehicle Interruption Cover provides a lump-sum benefit of up to £450 to drivers if their vehicle is damaged following an accident and is off the road for 24 hours or more. For UberPro partners at Diamond level, Uber will contribute the premium for this cover.

Cover is available for drivers on the Uber app and is fully flexible to fit drivers’ workstyles: drivers can sign up to the new product in a few clicks via the Uber app and the premium is automatically collected from completed Uber trips. Cancelation is available immediately, also on the Uber app.

To enable this offering, AXA XL leveraged a new global Affinity Insurance Platform developed by AXA to serve the everyday needs of digital communities. This new public cloud technological platform supports agile product design and API-led distribution for insurance, which here is connected in real-time with the Uber application.  The new platform will enable AXA XL to easily provide new innovative insurance products in the future to Uber partners and couriers.

Vehicle Interruption Cover will initially be offered to all Uber drivers in the UK, with the aim of exploring the feasibility to expand this to Uber partners and couriers in other European countries.

This new insurance solution is just one of many product offerings that have been developed and implemented since AXA and Uber first announced their partnership in Paris back in 2017.

Speaking about the announcement, Paul Greensmith, CEO UK Legal entities at AXA XL commented: “With Vehicle Interruption Cover, we have applied the knowledge and experience gained from working with some of the world’s leading companies and combined it with the technology and innovative mindset of the AXA Group Affinity Insurance Platform team. We are proud to help drivers make the most of Uber’s flexible earning opportunities, without having to worry as much about their financial security should something go wrong.”

Russell Corbould-Warren, Head of Insurance, Uber, Europe, Middle East and Africa added: “We are always looking at more ways we can help drivers and we are very happy that this partnership with AXA XL can be part of our loyalty programme for drivers, Uber Pro. Uber and AXA share the belief that drivers should have access to affordable and portable insurance protections that create a safety net for a sustainable and flexible workstyle. Our teams worked very well together showing great innovation and focus to create this new Vehicle Interruption Cover and used new AXA tech capabilities to deliver a fantastic user experience that is one of the best we have seen from any insurer.”
