Liberty Specialty Markets (LSM) supported the Royal Observatory Greenwich’s Astronomy Photographer of the Year 15, which has uncovered an exciting scientific discovery. The competition to bring these inspiring and thought-provoking images from across the globe to the public has announced its winners.

Marcel Drechsler, Xavier Strottner, and Yann Sainty were overall winners for their photograph Andromeda, Unexpected that captures a huge plasma arc next to the Andromeda Galaxy (M31). The image has prompted scientists, in a transnational collaboration, to investigate the giant object, which could be the largest structure near us in the Universe.

LSM offers fine art insurance for collections and exhibitions. It also has programmes and initiatives across the world aiding artists throughout their careers, ranging from fostering creativity in educational institutions to supporting both novice and expert artists. By sponsoring public exhibitions, LSM recognises the significance of art and innovation in society, and the importance of a vibrant and flourishing arts sector.

Ross Drabble, Underwriting Manager, Fine Art & Specie, UK LSM said, “We are honoured to continue our partnership with the Royal Museums Greenwich and congratulate this year’s winners for their extraordinary photographs. Through this collaboration, we are privileged to present captivating exhibitions that are destined to inspire and leave a lasting impact on the public. In this case, the competition has resulted in an incredible discovery that has prompted scientists from around the world to come together in collaboration. These exhibitions are a testament to our dedication to acknowledging the importance of art and innovation.”

Winners Marcel Drechsler, Xavier Strottner, and Yann Sainty said, “It's an enormous honour for our team to receive this important award and we are grateful for all the support, friendship and encouragement we have received along our journey. It encourages us to continue to pursue our passion for astrophotography and, of course, research with dedication.”

The winning image will be on display alongside the category winners in the accompanying exhibition, opening at the National Maritime Museum on Saturday 16th September 2023.
