In the run up to Eurovision Aviva shares details of music related home claims

Eurovision-Song-Contest-Liverpool-2023

With Eurovision just days away, Aviva is urging fans of the contest to make sure their celebrations hit the right note.

According to new research from the insurer, two out of five UK residents plan to watch the contest, with most viewing the show in their own home or at a friend’s house this weekend.

But Aviva advises it has seen scores of musical incidents wreaking havoc in recent years, with Eurovision directly cited on a number of occasions. Home claims range from cocktails knocked over laptops while watching the show, to rogue microphones and karaoke machines smashing TV screens.

So, as the nation gets ready to make its mind up, Aviva reveals a few claim examples not to copy this weekend:

  • Margarita mayhem: One Eurovision enthusiast got so excited watching the show, they sent their margarita flying, tipping it into their laptop.
  • Spice up your life! One party guest caused musical mayhem when they fell over carrying a dish of curry at their friend’s house. The customer ended up claiming for a new musical instrument commenting: “the guitar is totally ruined… there is curry in the guitar.”
  • Keyboard catastrophe: Another party guest found that electric pianos were not designed to be used as chairs when he sat on one and cracked it in half.
  • Sticky situation: One customer had set up his amplifier so his guests could enjoy music at a house party. But one partygoer managed to spill their drink into the equipment – and in spite of the customer being an electrician, the amp could not be fixed.
  • Karaoke king: Another customer was enjoying a karaoke night at home when his grandson let the microphone swing into the TV with such force it cracked the screen.
  • Dancing queen: Aviva has several examples of enthusiastic dance moves being the enemy of TVs too. From youngsters to grandparents, several customers said their cracked screens were caused by someone falling into the TV while throwing a few shapes in the living room.
  • Cut a rug: Aviva also found that wine and dance moves can also be a clumsy combination, with many a carpet bearing the consequences. In one instance, a party guest laughed so hard at her friend’s spillage, she went on to drop her own drink too.
  • And finally: Eurovision has other uses too. One customer used the event to work out exactly when their phone’s screen was broken. They knew it wasn’t on the night of the show as they had been very active tweeting about the event.

Director of Property Claims, Kelly Whittington says: “Millions of song-lovers are looking forward to a fantastic weekend, with two fifths of UK adults planning to enjoy Eurovision. However, we’ve seen from our claims experience that people can sometimes get lost in music – to the point that they can be clumsy to say the least!

“If people are planning to get behind their favourite acts and celebrate on Saturday, we’d suggest that they remove any easily breakable items from the party zone, take extra care with any drinks and steer clear of the TV, particularly if they’re showing off their dance moves.

“Accidental damage cover – an optional extra on home insurance – can often help if the worst happens. But prevention is the best course of action, so douze points to those who get ready by preparing their homes in advance!”
