On Wednesday 30 August 2023, Climate Activists, joined by the mysterious Oil Slick performers, visited the offices of 9 Lloyd’s insurance managing agents who despite increasing pressure, refuse to rule are out proving insurance cover for the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP).

Money Rebellion and Coal Action Network, are challenging insurance companies that are profiting from EACOP, a project that is set to have severe impact on ecosystems, communities and water supplies across Uganda and Tanzania, destroying both lives and livelihoods, displacing thousands of people from their land.

As the march moved on, a Toxic Oil Clean Up team wearing hazmat suits, goggles and gloves visited each office as a reminder of the impacts of the inevitable oil leaks along the route of the pipeline.

It is believed that one leak could spell disaster, as a third of the pipeline would run through the basin of Lake Victoria, on which more than 40 million people depend for water and food production.

The pipeline threatens one of the most ecologically diverse and wildlife-rich regions of the world and renowned American ecologist Bill McKibben has commented that, “The proposed route looks almost as if it were drawn to endanger as many animals as possible.”
