Low winter sun – a very real fire risk
I’m Tom Sims, Home & Legacy Claims Manager.
As we’re approaching winter, we want to make our brokers and customers aware of the very real risk of house fires caused by the rays of the low winter sun.
The sun can shine through a home’s windows and be magnified by glass objects like crystal ornaments, vases and mirrors, to the extent that it can cause material furnishings to catch fire. It might sound far-fetched but as a household insurance provider, we’ve dealt with a number of claims caused by the sun rays – with devastating effects to our policyholders and their families. I can assure you, this is no urban myth – the risk is real.
With that in mind:
- Keep glass out of direct sunlight – at any time of year, but particularly when the sun is low in the sky. That’s vases, crystal ornaments, jars, bottles, mirrors – spend time checking for risks in your home. A lot of people have their dressing table in the bedroom window with a vanity mirror on it. It might seem harmless enough but I’ve seen devastating, total loss house fires caused by this very situation.
- Make sure smoke alarms are fitted on every floor of your home. If you live in a large house, place more than one on every floor. Check your smoke alarms monthly; make sure the batteries do not run flat.
- If you do have a fire – close the door on the blaze, get out, stay out and call 999

Home and Legacy: Could inclusive landlord policies change the way landlords use lettings agents?
Hi – I’m Ade Ewington, Underwriting Director at Home & Legacy. This year we improved and refreshed our range of landlord insurance.

Why bother organising these separately? The certificates can actually work out cheaper than purchasing as standalone add-ons through a letting agent.

Home & Legacy - Review of 2014 and what to look out for in 2015 video
Hello and Happy New Year to you all. My name is Barry O’Neill from Home & Legacy, and I’d like to take this chance to thank all our brokers for your support over the last year.
I am sure you all know that the market in 2014 was particularly competitive, and I am aware that you have more options than ever as to where you place your business so it was really pleasing for me to see our conversion rates improving as the year progressed. That tells me that we have been more successful in delivering to you competitive products in terms of cover and price. Thank you for recognising that in the support many of you gave to us last year
Your recognition of our service has also been reflected in industry surveys - we came 6th in the Insurance Times Broker Survey and we were also nominated for an Underwriting Service Award. Thank you for taking the time to respond to those surveys.
Ultimately we are rightly judged by our clients on our claims service and I am delighted that clients who have had a claim have rated our performance with a Net Promoter Score of 66.2, which is a great result which I believe justifies your confidence in recommending us to your clients.
So what’s next for Home & Legacy in 2015? Well firstly, in quarter one, we will release our new and improved Landlord polices. We have taken what is already a successful product and improved it.
Furthermore, we have listened to broker feedback and we will be making some significant changes to our Motor policy wordings in the 2nd quarter.
