Society of Claims Professionals hails decline in whiplash claims

Decline in whiplash motor insurance claims

'Victory for law-abiding motorists’

New figures from the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) reveal that personal injury insurance claims for whiplash have fallen to their lowest level in seven years.

The twenty per cent drop in claims is partly down to reforms made to whiplash rules.

It is hoped that if the reduction in claims for whiplash is a long-term trend, insurers will be able to lower their premiums for motorists who do not make a claim. In spite of a fall in reported accidents, the MoJ cites that road traffic accident personal injury claims are fifty per cent higher than they were a decade ago.

In December 2018 the Civil Liability Bill received Royal Assent, with the full measures expected to come into effect in April 2020. This could further reduce the numbers of whiplash claims.

Sue McCall, Chair of the Board at the Society of Claims Professionals, said:

“Fraudulent claims for whiplash have been hitting the pockets of millions of law-abiding motorists for too long. The decline in whiplash claims will translate into savings for consumers and is a victory for common sense and trust in the claims profession.

“Claims is the moment of truth for insurers. The most recent figures available reveal that more than 97 per cent of claims were paid out, and insurers will continue to be there for the public at their moment of need.

“By taking a strong stance against false whiplash claims, the public and the profession are united against an action which drives up costs and reduces trust in the profession.”
