Q and A with Harbour Business Operations Analyst Elly Barry

What is your role at Harbour Underwriting?

I am the business operations analyst for Harbour Underwriting.

Can you briefly outline your career before you joined Harbour Underwriting?

I joined Harbour Underwriting straight after I graduated from The University of Sheffield with LLB (Hons).

I originally joined Harbour Underwriting as an underwriting assistant and soon discovered a flair for the operational side of things. This led me to take on the role of business operations analyst, where I work closely with Clive, our operations director.

What prompted you to go into the insurance industry?

It sounds a little bit of a cliché, but I sort of fell into the industry. I had never heard of After the Event insurance before joining Harbour Underwriting. I have found it interesting to learn how the product is used in commercial litigation.

What do you most enjoy about your role?

I enjoy identifying areas for improvement and finding solutions to make everything run as smoothly as possible. It is rewarding to work in a team and contribute to creating and refining processes to improve business practices and enable more efficient working.

What are your ambitions in your current role?

To continue developing business practices as the business continues to grow so that we can work efficiently and smoothly.

Who has been the most influential person in your career, and how have they helped you?

I work with lots of great people from whom I have learnt so much in such a short amount of time!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to get to where you are/do the job you do? What qualities do they need?

You need to be observant and have strong analytical skills to identify areas for improvement.  A problem-solving attitude is key to developing and implementing improvements to business practices.

What do you most enjoy doing outside of work?

Anything outdoorsy, you won’t find me sitting down in my free time. Equestrian sport is my first passion and is a huge part of my life. But I also enjoy going on hiking adventures and travelling at every given opportunity.

What is your guilty pleasure?

I love to sit at the piano and have a sing song.
