Don't confuse your 3G and 4G phone signal with types of synthetic grass
Whilst the Premier League spend millions maintaining their grounds, smaller football clubs across the world are often held back by poorly maintained, uneven pitches. Artificial Turf Pitches (ATPs) have long been coveted by amateur footballers everywhere as they, quite literally, level the playing field.
For those not in the know, ATP’s are now a bit more sophisticated than the astro-turf of the 1960’s. Early iterations of the turf filled many major stadiums in the United States, but the product needed improvement and so, 50 years on, we have 2G and 3G pitches. 4G is not yet recognised by any accredited governing body.
The terms 2G and 3G refer to second and third generation pitches, the former a sand-based short synthetic grass commonly used for hockey and the latter a long synthetic grass with shock-absorbent rubber crumb, best for football pitches.
According to experts, the 3G pitch offers better grip, a smoother playing surface, a more weather proof surface than regular grass pitches. The rubber crumb spread into the artificial grass is shock absorbent and less likely to cause impact injuries.
With the costs of these more advanced pitches reaching dizzying heights, ensuring adequate insurance coverage is in place is vital. If a club is lucky enough to get a 3G pitch installed the insurer must be informed, the same goes for upgrading any equipment and renovations to stands and clubhouses.
