AmTrust at Lloyd’s appoints Chris Gibbs to head up Space Team

AmTrust at Lloyd’s (ATL) has announced the appointment of Chris Gibbs as their new Head of Space. Chris, who has joined from Osprey Aerospace Ltd, brings significant expertise in this product class and will build upon the existing book of Space business for AmTrust.

Prior to Osprey, Chris was the Space Class Underwriter for Brit Insurance for eight years and previous to this role he was Space Underwriter for Assicurazioni Generali SpA.

Chris Gibbs says on his appointment: “I am very pleased to have the opportunity to further develop the Space capability for AmTrust. I believe the team can position AmTrust at the forefront of the Space sector and bring exciting new product development to the market.”

Chris will be leading a reputable underwriting team that has extensive industry experience and professional expertise. The team is supported by a dedicated satellite engineer with over 40 years’ experience in both the space sector and the insurance industry.  As Technical Advisor John Fitton is responsible for the technical analysis of space risks, the review of in orbit renewals, and the technical analysis of claims.  John previously worked at Osprey Underwriting Agency Ltd and before this as a Program Management Specialist in the Space and Network Engineering Department at Telesat Headquarters where he also consulted on behalf of Brit Insurance.

The Space team is also supported by General Aviation underwriter, Paris Riseborough.

Space remains a niche class of business, with only approximately 40 satellite insurers globally.  The Space products AmTrust will be selling cover satellites during their launch and in orbit operations and these bespoke policies can be produced for satellite owners and operators.

Chris Jarvis, ATL Director of Underwriting & Active Underwriter (s1861), says: “We are delighted to welcome Chris to AmTrust.  This additional Space capability will position us as a market leader in this field as we look to grow this pioneering new book of business in the next few years.”
