Airmic "cautiously" planning for Brighton conference in October 2021

Airmic is cautiously planning for a return to physical events in the second half of 2021, and for the return of its flagship Annual Conference in October.

  • Digital events will take place in the first half of 2021
  • The Annual Conference is to be held in Brighton, 4th to 6th October
  • All events will prioritise networking opportunities

Airmic is preparing for the return of its Annual Conference in 2021 as part of planning to gradually reintroduce physical events as soon as it is safe to do so.

The headline event for the year is Airmic Annual Conference, which will be a physical event in Brighton, 4th to 6th October.

The objectives of the Annual Conference are to enable partner-member face-to-face networking and meetings and to provide knowledge sharing and learning opportunities.

Delaying the conference from June to October has necessitated moving the venue from Manchester to Brighton. This provides a greater leadup time deliver the best possible conference in 2021.

The theme of the Annual Conference is “Driving Transformation - Shaping the future”, with applications from positioning for growth to creating an environmentally sustainable future.

This theme focuses on meeting the challenges faced in mitigating risks and converting opportunities, with an underlying confidence for risk professionals to actively work together to shape their organisation’s place in the new world with a sustainable future.

The exhibition floor plan will go on sale to the market in May. At the end of June, a final decision will be taken to commit to our preparations, based on consultation with stakeholders, a risk assessment and health and safety advice, at which point we will bind our financial commitment to the event.

Before the conference, a programme of Forum events will start with a Technology Forum 13th May. The focus will be on how the pandemic has pushed organisations over the “technology tipping point” and transformed business forever.

The second Forum will be a fastTrack Forum, taking place 8th July. This Forum will focus on the upskilling, networking, and career development opportunities vital to fastTrackers in Airmic’s member and partner organisations.

The fastTrack programme remains focussed on those in the first four years of their careers but is open to all members who want a refresh in the fundamental principles of risk and insurance or who want to develop an awareness in specific subjects to supplement their role.

As part of a brand refresh, Airmic has released a brochure and webpage featuring a new fastTrack programme for 2021 and 2022. Sessions will continue to run online given current restrictions, but these were very successful last year, reaching more members than ever before.

Following the conference, Airmic is planning an Enterprise Risk Management Forum in November, and the return of the Annual Dinner 7th December as the final keystone in a return towards "business as usual".

For more detail on Airmic’s plans for 2021, including the Annual Conference and other events in the programme, you can find an interview with CEO John Ludlow, on the Airmic website.

Commenting on the theme for the 2021 Annual Conference, “Driving Transformation - Shaping the future”, Mr Ludlow commented:

“As risk professionals we can spot a need or demand, understand what’s driving a threat or causing a vulnerability, and develop our own ideas about what might form a solution, speak to people about it, and gain support for changing what was otherwise inevitable. That’s what leaders do.

“The next big challenge is the environment. Now we understand that for sustainable development we need to protect the environment to sustainably grow the economy. It’s another example of shaping our environment, quite literally.”

Underlining the conference objectives, Julia Graham, Deputy CEO and Technical Director of Airmic, commented:

“Airmic provides a platform for risk and insurance professionals to stay in touch, to communicate with each other and share knowledge, ideas, and information in collaboration with our partners. We look forward the time when we can blend our success in achieving this virtually by meeting up together in Brighton.”
