Traditional Values, Innovative Underwriting

Folgate Insurance Company Limited has been a recognised and established insurer in the UK since 1877. Throughout its previous history, the company principally wrote major personal lines and commercial lines accounts, as well as business generated by regional brokers. Folgate was placed into run-off in 2002, and in August 2014, APC Underwriting (APC) purchased 100% of the shareholding.

APC could see the potential of resurrecting this long-established insurer and in September 2015 Folgate was granted its license by the regulators to act as a re-insurer.  As Folgate’s managing agent, APC was then in a position to commence writing commercial lines business through it. In June 2018 Folgate was granted its direct license by the Prudential Regulation Authority and will now act as the direct insurer.

Come and have a chat to one of our Senior members of staff to find out what the newest insurer in the UK can offer retail brokers and MGA’s and hear about Folgate’s original values being preserved by combining tradition underwriting with a market-leading business model.

Standard Business Methods or Binding Authorities?

Folgate trades with its partners the way we like to do business - simple, quick and effective. We can trade via the internet through our on-line trading platform, through portals such as Acturis, or through traditional presentations. In addition to these, Folgate also has the ability to distribute capacity for binding authorities under the following classes:

  • Property
  • Liability
  • Professional Indemnity
  • Directors & Officers
  • Extended Warranty

If you have a binder or scheme you want to discuss, book an appointment with our Chief Underwriting Officer, Ian Russell via the link below.

The UK Broker Market in 2019

It’s been a strange start to the market in 2019. We have seen a considerable amount of fallout from the London Market and Lloyds in the Professional Indemnity and Liability market as well as some signs of some property sectors coming under pressure such as general household accounts. After 18 years of a soft market, can the trend of rates that seem too cheap be coming to an end?

So, what are Folgate’s plans for 2019? Our plan is simple, to continue writing the business we have written under APC for the past 25 years and grow by giving our capacity to selected brokers for schemes across the UK. The broker market is very important to us, and we would love you to come along and see what we have to offer in more detail.
