Travelinsuranceexplained.co.uk, the consumer awareness initiative, is supporting a Parliamentary drop-in to be held this week by Shadow Minister for Public Health Sharon Hodgson MP as part of its campaign to lobby Government and key stakeholders to bring more access to insurance for vulnerable consumers.

The drop-in session on Wednesday 11th July at the House of Commons will cover issues such as:

  • Access to insurance to help those with mental health conditions, diagnosed with cancer and other medical conditions find suitable cover at an appropriate premium.
  • What people need to consider so they are able to buy the most appropriate policy for them
  • The rise of comparison sites standardising travel insurance in the eyes of the consumer however no two travel insurers policy wordings are the same;
  • Consumers are often buying cover purely on price; but are left disappointed when they need to claim as the policy does not offer the right cover for their circumstances.

Fiona Macrae, head of Travelinsuranceexplained.co.uk, said: “We are delighted to be invited to support this drop-in, which is timely following the release of the FCA’s recent feedback report on access to travel insurance. We want to keep the momentum behind the access to insurance journey for those with all medical conditions. As part of our campaign, we will be inviting key stakeholders, including politicians, charities, insurers’ medical risk rating providers and associations, in the Autumn to join us for a roundtable to have an open debate on the issues raised by the FCA report. Travelinsuranceexplained.co.uk intends to lobby and campaign heavily in the coming months to make sure the consumer gets the right outcomes and the industry is seen in the positive light that it rightly deserves.”

Sharon Hodgson, Member of Parliament for Washington and Sunderland West and Shadow Minister for Public Health said: “I am very happy to be hosting this drop-in session today as it will inform MPs about the importance of getting the right travel insurance, not only for them and their family, but to then help them to inform their constituents also. For example, access to travel insurance for someone with an existing health condition such as cancer or heart disease can be difficult, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t enjoy a holiday too, that is why people should know which insurance package works best for them.”
