Aviva Fraud manager seconded to City of London Police

An insurance industry professional has been seconded to the City of London Police where she will draw on her expertise to assist the Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED) in its fight against fraud.

Fraud Investigation Manager Vicki Mulholland from Aviva is the second insurance professional to carry out a secondment with IFED. She will be sharing her industry knowledge and expertise with officers and staff to further their understanding of the industry and any new and emerging threats.

The secondment will further strengthen ties between IFED and industry and make life even more difficult for the fraudsters and con-artists that look to exploit insurers by making false and fraudulent claims.

Vicki will be working alongside officers and investigators from IFED on various investigations to see how they put cases together for prosecutions and the steps detectives have to go through in order to put suspected fraudsters in front of the courts.

Vicki will be sharing her knowledge of fraud investigation within the industry, advising officers on the best way of working with her counterparts in the insurance industry. In turn, she will also be sharing her learning with colleagues and counterparts from across the industry to further improve collaboration between IFED and insurers.

Detective Chief Inspector Oliver Little said: “The secondment programme has proved to be a resounding success, with benefits flowing both ways.  Having close collaboration and a strong relationship with insurers within the industry is critical to our success in prosecuting those committing insurance fraud.

“The more we can all do to understand the pressures, demands and constraints that we, and those working in the industry face, the more we can improve the way we work together and ultimately bring more insurance fraudsters to justice, to protect the public and the wider economy.

“Vicki brings a huge amount of experience with her, particularly in the application fraud area, which is an area of focus for the industry.  The secondment programme is here to stay and we will be looking to add to this later in the year.”

Vicki Mulholland, from Aviva said: “I’m excited about working with IFED on this secondment and hope to be able to share my knowledge and 26 years experience of working in the industry with the officers and staff here.

“Hopefully I’ll be able find new ways the industry can help IFED to make it easier for them to secure convictions and make life even more difficult for those looking to commit insurance fraud.”

Vicki has 26 years’ experience in the industry, working with Aviva for 18 years, 13 of which she has spent in the insurance fraud investigation field.

Vicki is the second person from the insurance industry to work with IFED on a six-month secondment. She was appointed following a competitive selection process held after the unit circulated the opportunity to industry via the Association of British Insurers and Lloyd’s of London in November 2014. Her secondment is wholly funded by Aviva.
